Since the average homeowner does not have the disposable income that they did three years ago, many contractors are having to tighten their belts and get more competitive in their landscape contracting bids. Since the city of Maple Grove has many people that have been impacted by the current economic downturn, choosing a landscape contractor is much easier than it used to be. Now, you can hire one, and have them at your place within a relatively short period of time. It used to be that the really good contractors were completely booked by the end of March. That is not the case now. To choose a good contractor in Maple Grove, I recommend the following: Spend a fair amount of time online or looking at books at the library to get a really good idea of what kind of features or design you think might improve your yard. Do not get to emotionally attached to your ideas until you talk to the contractors as they are professionals and may have even better ideas than you! It is, however, VERY helpful to know enough that you can tell if the contractor knows his stuff or if he is just trying to create a larger bill for you. Once you have a good idea, research the contractors you want to solicit bids from and get them to your house. Do not share with the contractors what the other contractor’s have suggested until you get your choice down to just a couple of contractors that you trust. This keeps you from giving away the store and helping an inferior landscape contractor from knowing what the good contractors are suggesting. Once you get the job and the price ironed out, the contractor will want a down payment. It used to be that the standard was 50%. This is not the cast now, and you may be able to get by with a 25% down payment for the job and then a progress payment or two. I would in no situation pay the contractor more than 70% of the job before they are done. You need the job finished and money is the primary carrot that will get the job done.
