The internet has plenty of information and articles available for those who want to learn more about growing things. There are even articles for gardeners who have years of experience under their belts. Even gardeners who have won medals like to keep current on gardening trends. Since you are a new gardener you probably have a lot of ideas about how growing a garden of your very own is supposed to work.

While you learn how to grow your own garden you are probably going to encounter a lot of contradictory ideas. Learning how to tell the difference between good information and bad information can take a while. Here are some hints and tricks that every new gardener should know.

Go slowly. If this is the first time you’ve grown a garden begin with one plant (or just a couple of one type of plant) and a small plot of soil. This will help you learn how to tend the ground as well as the plant you are trying to grow. If you do well with your first plant (or patch of plants) then you can move up to more complicated gardens and gardening techniques. Many newbie gardeners take on way too much way too soon and then later they are disappointed when they can’t seem to grow a vast array of plant life. To really learn the art of gardening start small and work your way up-don’t skip steps.

Slugs and snails are pretty much the most irritating pests in a garden. You should get over your squeamishness as soon as possible. These pests love garden plants and are excellent hiders so even if you develop a way of dealing with them, you probably won’t get rid of them all. Get used to the idea of taking them off of your plants.

Strategically placed jars of beer and running some copper wire are some of the popular folk remedies for gardens plagued by slugs and snails. There are even special traps and special food that you can try to use to lure them away from your plants but sooner or later you will have to learn to deal with them first hand.

Composting is a fantastic way to keep your growing garden healthy. You can make your own compost without having to buy special things.

Beginning your own compost pile is easy. You can build a compost pile out of just about all of the organic material that you normally toss out: coffee grounds, tea bags, paper, dead flowers, fruit and vegetable scraps from meals, grass cuttings and even the bedding from a hamster, gerbil, rabbit or guinea pig cages can be used. Pretty much the only thing you can’t put into a compost pile is meat. You’ll have created homemade fertilizer and garden food all on your own! Lots of people think that gardening is difficult. Believe it or not gardening is something everyone can do! Don’t let yourself feel intimidated by the different and complex gardens you will see on television or in magazines. You might not be ready to believe this yet but it truly is possible for you to grow the lush gardens you’ve fantasized about having. With just a few seasons of gardening even a total newbie can learn how to have great luck with plants. Have fun! You’ll get there eventually!

How to Start a Garden

Planting a garden can be easier and more enjoyable with these gardening tips

Planting a garden, whether it is a vegetable plot or a flower bed, is an adventure where your creativity and patience are put to the test! You are directly responsible for the beautiful rose blooms or the delicious tomatoes that develop in this section of the land. Therefore to have the most success you need to determine where you plant!

The location of the garden should be determined by several factors: sunlight, soil conditions, water and wind exposure. Take notes on when this area of the yard is exposed to sunshine. This can determine which plants will thrive there. Test your soil to see if conditioners are needed to bring it up to optimum growing conditions. Pay attention to whether water collects in this section of the lawn. Some plants do well in soggy locations, but most need well-drained soil. Strong winds can dry out soil and plants, so try to locate the plot out of direct winds. Once you have determined where you will create your garden masterpiece you are ready to select plants!

Choose plants that will grow in your zone. Although you might have your heart set on a certain flower or vegetable, if your climate or garden location won’t support this choice, you will inevitably be disappointed. To avoid this, choose plants that are meant for your growing zone (ideally native plants), and disease-resistant and drought tolerant plants. Ask the employee at the nursery for assistance in selecting these. Be aware of the future size of each plant. A tree planted near a house will eventually provide shade, but it could also be a hazard during storms.

Plan out what flowering plants you would like for the seasons. Most perennials only bloom for a short time, so by mixing in some annuals there will be constant color in your garden. By having seasonal color you can change the look of your garden and create excitement and personality!

Now that you have your garden location selected and your plants purchased, you are ready to start digging! What tools are required to get things started? These include:

Rake: for seasonal cleanups and spreading/leveling soil

Trowel: for transplanting and weeding

Shovel: for digging, scooping, spreading compost and planting

Hoe: for chopping weeds and tilling soils

Pruners: for clipping flowers and pruning trees

Garden Gloves: for protecting your hands from blisters and dirt

Garden Hose: invest in a top-of-the-line hose that will resist kinking, is flexible and coils easily. Invest in high quality tools. They will last longer and are more durable than their cheaper counterparts.

Have fun starting a garden. Don’t try to create a masterpiece your first year-build up to it. Select a few choice plants that are more expensive. The rest can be less expensive, smaller complementary plants to round out your garden. Gardening is our nation’s number one leisure activity so go out and have a good time in your own piece of earth!

Landscape gardening is all about developing your space to your personal preferences, and has the added benefit of increasing the value of your home. With the use of trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, annuals, grasses and rocks in different combinations, containers and areas, you can create any effect that you want to. By knowing the light, water, and soil requirements that you have in your yard, you can create interesting landscapes with simple gardening practices.

>

Most of us have to begin our landscape gardening with trees or fences or other established features that exist. If you are creating your own yard from the ground up, you have a lot more flexibility. The only factors that cannot be manipulated are the climactic conditions and available light. Soil can be altered with the addition of materials and nutrients as needed, water can be provided generously or sparsely, but natural light and temperature are what they are. Taking the best advantage of that has to be the basis for your landscape design, before you begin gardening.

If forty below and snow are part of your winter, there is no point trying to grow wisteria vines or hyacinths. There are plenty of other choices that are either native to cold climates or have been developed to flourish in them. The more you work with mediums and specimens that are native to your region, the easier you will find developing your personal landscape. Gardening with materials that are easily accessible is less expensive, and less frustrating. Plants that are native to your area will require a lot less work to coax them to their best, than imported species.

Special features, such as a pond or stream can be the focus of your landscape. Gardening can include the use of rocks of all sizes, up to and including boulders. Not too far from us is an entire yard that is covered with large rocks. They have been piled up and placed in interesting and pleasing forms, including a waterfall. A different yard takes advantage of a fairly deep ravine, by using it to shelter a fire pit. The addition of a big, round, brick pad built around the pit, makes it safer and even more inviting.

A friend uses containers like pails, tubs, and discarded wheelbarrows in her landscape gardening. She ‘recycles’ them from old yardsites or the landfill. One of our flower beds was killing even common, native perennials that we tried to grow in it. Whatever we tried just seemed to bake. Acting on a friend’s suggestion, we turned that particular area into a desert that includes cacti and now have a unique showpiece in our yard. Some cacti survive our winters, and some I just plant in for the summer, then winter them in the house and return them the next summer.

Landscape gardening is the science of finding the materials needed to create the space you want to live in. If you like rocks, use them. If you like water, make a pond or a stream to enjoy. Trees can define your space by serving as a shelter or privacy fence, and they can be part of your living space if you have a fire pit, bench or other something else functional amongst them. Much of landscape gardening is planning so determine what you want your landscape to look like and start gardening.

When you think of the Tibet, a lot of images come to mind. There are the beautiful mountain ranges that exude mystery and majesty. Tibetan Landscape gardening is a healthy religious atmosphere of Buddhist temples and monasteries. It is a culture of centuries-old communities barely touched by the modern world. But among other things, Tibet is also home to some of the most exotic flora on the planet. Now you can bring the wonders of this mysterious place in your own garden. How? With Tibetan Landscape Gardening of course!

There are different kinds of flowers that characterize the Tibetan landscape. Each one of them could bring beauty to your garden. An example of this is the buddleia. The buddleia is a shrub with lilac-colored flowers that are famous for their fragrance. Its leaves have a greenish grey colour and its body is known to grow to a height of 15 feet.

Another example of the Tibetan flora is the cotoneaster. In summer, the cotoneaster blooms beautiful pinkish-white flowers. It eventually turns into a luscious red fruit. Other types produce black instead of red fruits. The cotoneaster’s dark green leaves become orange comes autumn time. This plant grows up to six to eight feet in spread as well as height.

Another type is the flat rockspray cotoneaster with its herringbone branches. This type is the most widespread cotoneaster in Tibet. It also produces pink flowers and come autumn time, its dark green leaves become a fiery red. This plant grows up to ten feet in spread and ranges from two to five feet high.

Though not as enduring as other cotoneasters, the creeping cotoneaster is also a good choice. It blooms little white and pink flowers and grows up to a foot high.

The most famous Tibetan plant however is the liliaceae. This plant’s white bulbs are dried and exported to mainland China because it is believed that these pea-sized bulbs have healing properties.

Many gardeners also favour the goji berry plant in Tibetan landscaping. This is mostly confused with the wolfberry but is actually two distinct plants. Goji berries are sweet while wolfberries are bitterer. Goji berry is also quite adaptable to any soil type, from sand, clay or loam. However, it is best raised in well-drained soil. Once the plant takes root, it can now hold its own even in dry and humid conditions. Goji berries are, however, resistant to wetter climates. Goji plants prefer a lot of sun though of course it could still flourish under some shade. Some goji berries have been known to grow up to ten feet in height and to almost 12 feet in width because of its numerous vines. It produces white and purple flower in the form of little trumpets. This grows into the sweet berries that it is famous for during summertime. The goji berry is also an excellent indoor Tibetan plant.
