How to Start a Garden

Planting a garden can be easier and more enjoyable with these gardening tips

Planting a garden, whether it is a vegetable plot or a flower bed, is an adventure where your creativity and patience are put to the test! You are directly responsible for the beautiful rose blooms or the delicious tomatoes that develop in this section of the land. Therefore to have the most success you need to determine where you plant!

The location of the garden should be determined by several factors: sunlight, soil conditions, water and wind exposure. Take notes on when this area of the yard is exposed to sunshine. This can determine which plants will thrive there. Test your soil to see if conditioners are needed to bring it up to optimum growing conditions. Pay attention to whether water collects in this section of the lawn. Some plants do well in soggy locations, but most need well-drained soil. Strong winds can dry out soil and plants, so try to locate the plot out of direct winds. Once you have determined where you will create your garden masterpiece you are ready to select plants!

Choose plants that will grow in your zone. Although you might have your heart set on a certain flower or vegetable, if your climate or garden location won’t support this choice, you will inevitably be disappointed. To avoid this, choose plants that are meant for your growing zone (ideally native plants), and disease-resistant and drought tolerant plants. Ask the employee at the nursery for assistance in selecting these. Be aware of the future size of each plant. A tree planted near a house will eventually provide shade, but it could also be a hazard during storms.

Plan out what flowering plants you would like for the seasons. Most perennials only bloom for a short time, so by mixing in some annuals there will be constant color in your garden. By having seasonal color you can change the look of your garden and create excitement and personality!

Now that you have your garden location selected and your plants purchased, you are ready to start digging! What tools are required to get things started? These include:

Rake: for seasonal cleanups and spreading/leveling soil

Trowel: for transplanting and weeding

Shovel: for digging, scooping, spreading compost and planting

Hoe: for chopping weeds and tilling soils

Pruners: for clipping flowers and pruning trees

Garden Gloves: for protecting your hands from blisters and dirt

Garden Hose: invest in a top-of-the-line hose that will resist kinking, is flexible and coils easily. Invest in high quality tools. They will last longer and are more durable than their cheaper counterparts.

Have fun starting a garden. Don’t try to create a masterpiece your first year-build up to it. Select a few choice plants that are more expensive. The rest can be less expensive, smaller complementary plants to round out your garden. Gardening is our nation’s number one leisure activity so go out and have a good time in your own piece of earth!

Garden landscapes that take your breath away don’t transpire overnight. They are the result of meticulous planning and choosing the right garden landscape supplies. In this post, I’ve listed a few things that you need to note before you start landscaping your garden.

Landscape Edging

The process of edging has more to it than just defining a border for your yard. It gives a finished look to any garden landscape. Choose garden landscape supplies that are functional, durable, and easy to install. Eco friendly garden landscaping materials made of renewable components are safe to use.

Stone Edging: To protect precious plants and flower beds in your garden use border stone edging. A decorative stone edge that comes with weed barrier protection has an added advantage.

Wood Edging: One of the cheapest garden landscaping materials, it is also very popular because of its versatility.

Plastic Edging: Of all garden landscape supplies, this one is extremely durable and is useful for composite edging. You can buy the Ultra Edge, which has a flexible construction that allows edges to easily bend around plants.

Fencing

Fencing plays a vital role in protecting your garden. You can choose from a variety of landscaping equipment to fence your garden. The most popular choices of fences are metal and bamboo. Metal fences are easily foldable and are available in many intricate styles. Plastic fences are heavy duty materials that are easy to unroll and install. Always choose fences that match your landscape garden designs.

Landscape Accessories

Choose from a range of practical landscape accessories to add to the style and splendor of your garden. A compost starter can speed up the process of making compost for garden use. To meet your garden needs, buy landscape accessories like tumbling composter and landscape adhesives.

Check out the Home Improvement Superstore to find the best garden landscape supplies including landscape accessories and landscaping equipment. Implement your landscaping ideas with the right garden landscaping materials to create the perfect garden.

I have a few questions about companion gardening. I plan on planting a bit today, and want to do this the best I can.

1) How close do the “companions” have to be? Like should they just be in the row next to it’s partner, or planted mixed in with them?

2) What are some companion plants/layouts, if you know of any? If a list of what I’m planting would help, I can provide that. Well hell, I’ll just go ahead and list it.

-Tomatoes (both regular sized and cherry)
-Spinach
-Leaf lettuce
-Carrots
-Onions, probably
-Radishes, probably
-Cilantro
-Basil
-Broccoli
-Bell peppers
-Yellow squash
-Zucchini
-Watermelon
-Peas
-Okra
-Cucumbers
-Sunflowers and other types of flowers (Marigolds, Gladiolas, and Freesia, to be exact)
-Oh, and probably some baking pumpkin

Anyway, I’m only planning on planting a few of each thing, not a whole row of each, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help!!
