What kind of software program do I need to design things at home in my workshop?

Out of wood and or metal. I wonder if there is something that would allow me to use my pc for designing and constructing hand made furniture, art , other ideas and animated holiday displays.(halloween/christmas), fencing. patios and awnings, etc.

I have AutoCad and Softplan. And no matter what, a house, a piece of furniture, a little wood working project, I start with pencil and paper (well, I use my tablet PC, but still just sketching, haha). And except for houses, that’s as far I get. Now if you need to communicate ideas with other people, in a business situation, where you are producing many things, and need separate people to produce separate parts, then AutoCad. But if this is something just for yourself, a pencil and paper, maybe calculator and scale, and you are ready.
